11 月 28 日（金）には、初級 2 以上の合同クラスで、日本語によるディベート対決を実施しました。 
当日は、なんと日本大使館から 3 名、JICA から 1 名、計 4 名の日本人ゲストの皆さまにご参加いただきました。 1 人は学生チームの“サポート役”として加わっていただき、残りの 3 人には審査員を務めていただきました。 
今回のテーマは「本と映画、どちらがおもしろいか」というシンプルながらも意見が分かれるものです。 

「映画は本から作られることが多いんだから、本のほうが面白いと思う！」
「いや、映画になるときにより完璧に仕上がるから、映画のほうがおもしろいと思う！」
「映画は高い！」
「いや、今は Netflix などがあって安いでしょう！」
「いやいや、それでも高いよ！」 など、活発な意見が次々と飛び交いました。

 この授業の目的は、日本的な「意見の伝え方」を学ぶこと。 相手の主張を頭ごなしに否定するのではなく、まずは受け止めて「たしかにそうかもしれませんね。 でも…」と部分的に否定しながら自分の意見を述べる、というコミュニケーション方法を練習しました。
 特別授業の前半はしっかり使えていたものの、議論が白熱してくると次第に言い回しも吹き飛び…うーん、まだまだですね（笑）とはいえ、学生たちが心から楽しんで参加していた様子が何よりでした。今後の成長がますます期待できます。（ちなみに本が勝ちました）

On Friday, November 28, a Japanese debate showdown was held with a joint class of students from the Beginner 2 level and higher. We were fortunate to have four Japanese guests attend that day: three from the Japanese Embassy and one from JICA. One guest joined the student teams as a "supporter," and the remaining three served as judges. The theme this time was a simple yet divisive one: "Which is more interesting: Books or Movies?"

"Since movies are often made from books, I think books are more interesting!"
"No, I think movies are more interesting because they are perfected when they are adapted!"
"Movies are expensive!"
"No, they're cheap now with Netflix and other services!"
"No, no, they're still expensive!"

A flurry of lively opinions was exchanged. 
The goal of this class was to learn the Japanese way of "communicating opinions." We practiced a communication method where you don't reject the other party's assertion outright, but first acknowledge it ("That may certainly be true. However...") and then state your own opinion while partially negating theirs. While the students used this technique well during the first half of the special class, as the debate heated up, the polite phrasing gradually flew out the window... Hmm, they still have a way to go. Nevertheless, the most important thing was that the students genuinely enjoyed participating. We have high expectations for their future growth! (By the way, books won.)
